East Franklin Avenue
In the seven blocks GNDC has developed on East Franklin Avenue in the south side Phillips neighborhood, nearly 50 businesses employ more than 500 people. Commercial and residential developments continue to emerge and flourish along the East Franklin corridor.
GNDCs efforts have improved systems for residents of the Phillips neighborhood, bringing in a grocery store, drug store, medical clinic, financial institution, and employers such as Franklin Street Bakery. This kind of basic neighborhood infrastructure, taken for granted in more affluent areas, is vital in all neighborhoods yet often neglected or allowed to decay in economically stressed parts of town.
In the Phillips neighborhood GNDC properties include Ancient Traders Market home to ALDI Foods, Marias Cafe, Native American Community Clinic, the flagship Community Safety Center created with the MPD, and many others. This successful model is now the subject of case studies on neighborhood revitalization.
